As the move towards hybrid work continues apace, never has the case for a modern, transparent and collaborative staff intranet, facilitating two-way communication, been greater.
According to Microsoft’s 2021 Work Trend Index: Annual Report, employees want the best of both worlds when it comes to the future of work. Over 70 percent want flexible working options to continue. Whilst over 65 percent crave more in-person time with their teams. A phenomenon Microsoft’s CVP Jared Spataro has dubbed the “Hybrid Paradox”.
Over the past 12 months, we’ve figured out how to get things done when everyone is working from home. Now we need to rethink how to handle that messy middle—when some people are together in-person, and others are remote.
How intranets improve internal comms
So, what better way to let employees work the way they want to, no matter where they choose to work, than through a central communications hub, accessible any time, anywhere and on any device?
Barnardos Australia adopted Valo Intranet during the pandemic and found that their internal comms actually improved in this period.
The non-profit organization, which has seven centers across the country, were already used to working in a distributed model. However, when staff were forced to work from home due to the pandemic Valo Intranet became their saviour.
Our communication is better than it was before [the pandemic]. People are using Valo Intranet daily because they love it. It’s engaging and it’s really easy to navigate. Even though everyone’s working remotely, I think we’re more connected.
How Valo improves the employee experience
But bringing people together is just one of the benefits of a modern staff intranet. With a flexible, accessible, easy-to-use intranet, allowing two-way communication, intranets can have huge benefits for organizations, providing an integrated employee experience.
They help to:
- Build and reinforce company culture
- Align employees with the mission and goals of their organization
- Facilitate growth and development through learning and onboarding resources
- Provide self-service access to employee services
- Provide boundaryless and targeted communication

At Valo Solutions, we’re constantly iterating and improving our solutions to meet the ever-changing digital workplace needs.
From listening to our customers, we’ve learnt that two-way comms within Microsoft Teams has become more important than ever. So too is the ability for businesses to reach front line staff or employees in the field with the most up-to-date news. This is why our upcoming Valo Intranet release 3.0 is our best yet.
1. Two-way communication made easy with Microsoft Teams commenting
It’s a well-known fact that app-switching results in lost productivity. Which is why we’ve made it possible for content editors to connect a news article to a Microsoft Team and channel.
So, whether employees are reading the article on the intranet, SharePoint or Teams, a two-way sync allows the conversation and engagement to be visible and accessible on all platforms.
This feature can be easily controlled by admins. They can configure the Teams commenting settings to allow content editors to either choose which Team or Channel the news story is connected to.
They can even set a default Team or Channel, or switch off the functionality altogether. Microsoft Teams commenting is even available for external users accessing the intranet or extranet.
2. Keep up-to-date, on the move, with push notifications
In the world of hybrid work, keeping frontline and field-based staff right up-to-date with company news is more important than ever. This is why we have introduced push notifications to our Digital Workplace app.
Previously push notifications were only available to staff if the app was open, but with Valo Intranet 3.0, employees can be kept informed at all times.
3. Improved flexibility and time-saving solutions for admins
We’ve introduced two new features designed to save time and effort for intranet admins.
First, we’ve improved the global navigation management system with a “drag and drop” function, which enables admins to optimize their site navigation quickly and easily.
Secondly, our new bulk editing feature means that multiple changes can be made to the site navigation at the same time.
Whether changing an item or updating the navigation hierarchy, it can now be applied in bulk. Previously changes had to be made individually, so this feature will undoubtedly save valuable time for intranet admins.
4. Quick and easy templated communications sites via Valo Teamwork
This latest cross-product feature allows organizations to expand their intranets with templated communications sites using Valo Teamwork.
The templated communications sites can be attached, or associated, to the central intranet hub site, which will automatically take on the intranet’s branding, global navigation and other intranet features.
This is perfect for large organizations who want to establish intranet hubs targeted to separate departments.
